Bringing Your Print Marketing into a Digital World

Daily-deal sites, text message marketing, social media – digital marketing has exploded as businesses look for new ways to attract clients in an increasingly digital world. But studies show that print marketing continues to be one of the most effective tools for small businesses. According to research conducted by the U.S. Postal Service, 87 percent of Gen Y and 86 percent of Gen X bring in the mail the day it’s delivered, and 73 percent of Gen Y and 68 percent of Gen X retail Direct Mail readers have used coupons received in the mail.

The marketing experts with PostNet, America’s Neighborhood Business Center with more than 700 international franchise locations, take a consultative approach when working with local small-business owners to design, print and distribute their marketing materials. Steve Greenbaum, co-founder and CEO of PostNet, answers a few frequently asked questions about digital versus print marketing and how business owners can successfully integrate the two.

Q: How do I decide between print vs. digital marketing?
A:  When deciding if your promotion or message is better suited for print or digital marketing, consider the benefits of both. Print pieces are more tangible and add a sense of credibility to your brand. They are also more difficult to ignore and are most useful when communicating a message that won’t change. Digital marketing is dynamic and beneficial when you have info that changes often. Social-media channels also provide a unique opportunity to build a dialogue with your customer, instead of simply pushing out information.

Q: What are QR codes?
A: Consumers use their smart phones to scan QR (quick response)barcodes to instantly download contact information, maps, etc straight to their phones. These can be included on your business card, on signs or banners, or even on your direct mail pieces so that your clients or potential clients can gain more in-depth info at the click of a button. But of course, you must use best practices to make these an effective part of your marketing campaign.

Q: What are PURLs?
A: PURLs (personalized URLs) are unique web addresses that act as permanent identifiers of your clients. They allow you to tailor your messages to specific customers and track which prospects demonstrate interest or engage with your brand.

Q: What are some best practices for using social media to promote my business?
A: Before you even open a Facebook page or Twitter account, take the time to lay out your goals and objectives. A stagnant page is worse for your brand than not having one at all. Once you identify your objectives, decide which channels are most suitable for your business. If you run a staffing firm, LinkedIn would be the best place to start. If your business is mobile, Twitter may be a good way to stay in touch when you’re on the move. Once you have a clear purpose for your social media accounts, be sure to add the social media links to your business cards and printed materials.

PostNet Scores High in Franchisee Satisfaction Survey

PostNet franchisees are among the most satisfied business owners in franchising, according to a recent survey conducted by Franchise Business Review, an independent market research firm based in Portsmouth, NH.

The survey asked franchisees questions related to training and support, system communication, franchisor/franchisee relations, financial opportunity, business lifestyle, and overall satisfaction with their business. Seventy-one percent (224) of PostNet’s franchisees participated in the Franchise Business Review satisfaction survey. The full results of PostNet’s survey are available at www.FranchiseBusinessReview.com.

“PostNet franchisees are more satisfied than many of the franchisee operators we survey each year,” said Franchise Business Review president and CEO Eric Stites. “They seemed particularly satisfied with the leadership provided by the corporate office.”

Founded in 1985 and franchising since 1993, PostNet is a small business services franchise with more than 800 locations worldwide. The startup investment for a PostNet franchise ranges from $174,000 to $196,000.

Franchise Business Review recently recognized PostNet exceptional survey results with a 2011 Franchisee Satisfaction Award—an annual award given to franchise companies with the highest satisfaction rankings.

Over the last five years, Franchise Business Review has surveyed more than 100,000 franchisees from more than 500 of today’s leading franchise brands. All active franchise owners who have been in business for three months or longer are invited to participate in this survey process.

“Our standard franchisee satisfaction survey includes 33 benchmark questions,” Stites said. “Franchise companies use our survey data to help better understand the experiences of their franchisees, and pin-point areas within their systems where improvements can be made to help increase satisfaction and engagement – which leads directly to overall increases in franchisee performance.”

5 Steps to Boosting Customer Satisfaction

A business’ most vital asset is their customer base. In fact, the level of customer service a company provides can make or break the business, especially in an ultra-competitive marketplace.

“We want our customers to feel confident enough in our services that they’d refer their friends and family to our stores, which is why delivering a great experience for every customer is so important,” said Brian Spindel, co-founder and COO of PostNet. “We’re able to do this by anticipating and meeting the changing needs of our customer base and by taking care of our employees who become integral to the operation of our franchise locations across the country.”

PostNet, America’s first Neighborhood Business Center with more than 300 U.S. locations, offers the following steps business owners can take to improve their customer service:

  • Make each customer a priority: Greet every customer with a smile as soon as they walk through the door and make an effort to get to know them by name. It sounds small, but it means a lot to customers.
  • Listen to your customers: Take the time to get to know your clients and their goals for each project. It will allow you to anticipate their needs and suggest new services or products.
  • Ask the right questions: Communication is key, and sometimes, the customer doesn’t exactly know what they are looking for. Guiding them and clarifying every project up-front will assure that you always meet or exceed their expectations.
  • Be the expert without being too pushy: Your customers are coming to you because they want your expertise. However, make sure not to overwhelm them with information. Give them time to process the info and work together to find the right solution to fit their needs. And keep in mind that, in the end, the customer is always right.
  • Solicit feedback: Whether it’s a simple paper survey or an online survey tool like Systino or Survey Monkey, always encourage and welcome suggestions on how to improve your services. Customers want to know that you value their input.

PostNet is showing their customer appreciation by holding their annual My PostNet Loves Me Contest. Throughout February, PostNet customers will share their testimonials of how their local PostNet went about and beyond to meet their needs. Visit www.facebook.com/PostNet to read the testimonials and vote for your favorite entry. The testimonial with the most ‘Like’ votes will win $200, and PostNet will choose the best testimonial to receive a free iPad.

Tips to Save You Time and Money on Holiday Shipping

The stress of finding the perfect Holiday gifts for all your loved ones doesn’t have to be compounded by long lines at the post office or even worse, a lost package. To help consumers avoid any unnecessary shipping nightmares, the shipping experts at PostNet offer the following tips:

  1. Pack properly. The packaging experts at PostNet can help make sure your gift arrives in one piece, but if you are packing a gift yourself, make sure it is in a sturdy box. Cross out any old labels and adequately protect the contents inside. A good rule is to make sure packages could be dropped a few feet without breaking.
  2. Plan ahead. You can always overnight, but be prepared to pay the price. Ground shipping is typically the least expensive option, and for Christmas deliveries, you should plan on shipping by Dec. 15, 2010.
  3. Fruits and veggies – know before you buy. States such as Arizona, California, Florida and Hawaii have more restrictions than others. Information on what kind of produce can be shipped and where can be found on the Department of Agriculture’s Web site. When in doubt, ask the experts at PostNet.
  4. Send to workplaces. If packages are delivered to a home and the delivery is repeatedly missed, the recipient runs the risk end up going out of their way to pick up the package at the shipping company’s nearest hub. Aside from the convenience factor, shipping to an office can also prevent theft and keep neighbors from snooping.
  5. Tracking numbers. Always keep your tracking number so packages can be located at any given time. A tracking number will also provide anticipated delivery dates.

PostNet recommends shipping by the following dates to make sure Christmas gifts get to their destinations on time:

Last Days to Ship:

  • Private carriers (UPS and FedEx): Dec. 17 for ground and international, and Dec. 20 for air/express
  • U.S. Postal Service: Dec. 15 for Parcel Post, and Dec. 20 for First-Class Mail. If you’re shipping a gift to an overseas military address (APO/FPO), you should plan to send it no later than Dec. 4.

Tips for Creating a Memorable Holiday Card

Sure, you can run out to your local big-box retailer and pick up a stack of Holiday cards to send to friends and family, but with today’s vast printing and digital editing options for the average consumer, why not add some creativity and personalize your Holiday card?

The print and design experts at PostNet want to help you think beyond just a family photo to add some personality and flare to their cards this season. Here are some tips to creating your own Holiday memento:

  1. Get out of the living room – Instead of the traditional family photo in front of the Christmas tree, superimpose your family members’ faces on characters in a famous Holiday scene. Or go for something more creative and fun – why not develop a scene of the family surfing in the tropics instead of braving the winter weather.
  2. Make it interactive – If you have lots of nieces and nephews or grandchildren, consider making a “coloring card.” The kids can decorate the cover featuring a winter wonderland or Santa Claus. Or, for the adults, create a mad lib to tell a humorous story about your family.
  3. Use multiple images – Instead of just one photo, why not create a collage of significant milestones, vacations, etc. This way, you can show what your family has been doing over the last year vs. just sending the standard letter recapping 2010.
  4. Think photo products – Instead of sending a card, consider creating a calendar or photobook incorporating family photos to also serve as a unique gift. Whether you have digital files of your photos or a stack of prints that you’d like to include, PostNet’s design experts are helping consumers create memorable, personal gifts featuring their photos.

Business Cards Are Here to Stay: Five Ways to Make Your Card a Standout

Surprising as it seems, a piece of heavy stock paper just 3.5 inches long and 2.5 inches wide remains a powerful marketing tool in today’s electronic-driven world.

“Amid all the handheld devices and iPads at meetings, conferences and other events, you still see business cards exchanged with regularity,” said Brian Spindel, co-founder and COO of PostNet. “Business cards are one of those eternal staples for any profession. Your card is the first and lasting impression. Design, stock, color and message all make a difference.”

Small business owners looking to upgrade their business cards are encouraged to enter PostNet’s We Print online contest. Throughout September, visit www.postnet.com and take a brief survey for a chance to win 250 free business cards. PostNet will award 10 winners with free business cards and one with an iPad. All contest participates will receive a coupon for discounts at PostNet.

With several hundred U.S. locations, PostNet, America’s first neighborhood business center, offers the following tips for creating an impactful business card:

  • Match it Up: The colors, styles and logos on a business card should match your other marketing materials. Mismatched business cards, letterhead and brochures look unprofessional.
  • Invest in Good Stock: The way a business card feels has a big impact. It’s hard to be taken seriously when you hand over a paper thin card that wrinkles in their wallet. Test some samples to find a good-quality paper stock that fits within your budget.
  • Choose Your Words Carefully: Add value to your business cards with phrases that provide useful information. For example, “Credit cards accepted,” “walk-ins welcome” or “located next to …”
  • Make Your Card “Download Friendly”: A new trend is to include QR codes on your business cards so that people can download your contact information or a map of your business straight to their phones.
  • Kill the Clutter: People should be able to easily see your name, website and contact information at a quick glance. Don’t overdo text or artwork.
  • Use Both Sides: If you want to include more details without clutter, use the back side of the card for additional vital information.
  • Cater to the Audience: While it might be a bit more expensive, tailoring the business card for each audience you serve can pay off in the long run. For example, if some of your clients are international, print off versions in different languages.

PostNet Named One of Top 26 Franchises for Hispanics

PostNet has been selected by the World Franchising Network (WFN) as one of its Top 26 Franchises for Hispanics for 2010. The results were published in the July issue of PODER Magazine, the successor to Hispanic Enterprise.

The WFN developed the list based on a rigorous analysis of several factors, including historical performance, brand identification, franchisee satisfaction, training, on-going support and financial stability. Another important determinant is the percentage of existing franchises that are Hispanic-owned, as well as the number of Hispanics in the franchisor’s top levels of management.

“We are very excited and honored to be a part of this list and being named Top 26 franchises for Hispanics,” said PostNet CEO Steven J. Greenbaum. “This recognition is a true testament to our hard work and commitment to helping people find their perfect business opportunity.”

The Top Franchises for Hispanics list was initially compiled by the National Minority Franchising Initiative (NMFI), a program launched by World Franchising Network (WFN) in 2000 to level the playing field and meet the needs of a largely under-represented market.

“Based on the results of this year’s survey, we are extremely pleased to notice both the increase in the number of Hispanic-owned franchisees, as well as the increased Hispanic representation among the top management. There is no question that the franchising community is increasingly aware of the economic power and underlying talents within the Latino community. Over time, Latinos will realize their full potential and the playing field will indeed be level. Hopefully, that day is not far off,” notes WFN Founder Rob Bond.

A copy of the PODER article can be found here. For more information on how PostNet and other franchise systems are working to increase their minority representation, please go to www.MinorityFranchising.com.

PostNet at 17: New Brand Positioning Delivers Results

After launching its new brand positioning in early 2010 to highlight services for small businesses, PostNet has experienced positive results from its focus on serving as the “Neighborhood Business Center” in the more than 300 communities its franchisees serve every day. Mid-year sales successes validate PostNet’s continued commitment to helping their customers grow their businesses by serving as the local resource for all of their design, print, copy and shipping needs.

As PostNet celebrates its 17-year anniversary, PostNet has evolved from a pack-and-ship, postal franchise to a full-service business center, with digital quick-printing services, graphic design and copy services. Offering a wide range of products, with a focus on consultative, personal service, has been well-received by PostNet customers and provided a positive lift for the brand in sales.

“When we surveyed our customers, they told us they love that PostNet is a convenient, locally owned business, and that we can help, no matter what the project is. That’s where the Neighborhood Business Center position came from,” said Steven Greenbaum, co-founder and CEO of PostNet. “We really feel that we’re offering something unique in the marketplace by being service-based, instead of product-based.”

Recent marketing promotions, including We Love Our Customers in February and Small Business Month in May, have helped to spread brand awareness and drive sales for the company’s more than 350 centers across the U.S. Both promotions were designed to thank loyal customers and showcase PostNet’s business services to potential customers.

The results proved that PostNet’s products and customer service resonate with consumers, even in a depressed economy. As a result of We Love Our Customers, PostNet saw the highest transaction counts on average since April 2009. System-wide sales for February were the best since Sept 2009, excluding December, which is a heavy shipping month for the company. Comparing January 2010 to February 2010, average transaction count per day was up 10.5%, and average store sales were up 5.4%.

PostNet centers received thousands of accolades from customers during the promotions, many focused on the dedication and personal service offered by their local owners.

“My PostNet is more than a partner, friend, employee, or spouse. They are like my right arm. Dependable and helpful every day, I look forward to my time with them,” said Scott McDonald, a demographer from California.

“Since PostNet’s inception, we are proud of the local relationships our franchisees and employees have made in their individual markets,” added Greenbaum. “A ‘Neighborhood Business Center’ is more than offering the right products and services for our customers – it’s listening, connecting and meeting their needs.”

PostNet Wins STAR Award for Franchise Recruitment

Franchise Update Media Group, the leading industry resource for franchise development, announces the winners of its annual STAR (Speaking To And Responding) Awards, which included two new categories this year – SEO and Social Media. The awards recognize excellence in lead generation, recruitment, and industry-wide best practices in franchising.

The winners received their awards at the Franchise Leadership & Development Conference, which was held in Chicago at The Drake Hotel, Sept. 23-25, 2009. The franchises with the most successful practices in generating leads and identifying qualified prospects received awards in five categories: Website, Telephone, Telephone and Website, SEO, and Social Media.

“Generating leads and qualifying prospects are the growth drivers of the franchise industry, and recognizing successful strategies provides validation for the winners and an example for other companies looking to improve their practices,” said Therese Thilgen, president of FUMG. “The addition of the SEO and Social Media categories highlights the importance of utilizing all of the communications options that are available to franchises for their outreach initiatives and recruitment programs.”

The awards are determined on the results compiled by mystery shoppers, who contact franchises by telephone, through the company’s website and through social media channels. Each franchise is evaluated according to a list of standard criteria that document the length of time it takes to obtain franchise information and reach a franchise development representative.

Posing as ideal franchise candidates, mystery shoppers contacted over 100 brands via their websites and on the telephone. The winners for 2009 are:

STAR Awards – Website:

  • 1st Place – Great Clips, Inc.
  • 2nd Place – PostNet International Franchise Corporation

PostNet Launches Business Conversion Program

PostNet announced today the launch of its national business conversion program designed to allow independent retail operators to diversify into PostNet’s digital copy, printing and shipping franchise model. At PostNet, there has always been an understanding and respect associated with the benefits of independent business ownership. In fact, the company began as an individual operator in 1983 and helped guide over 400 entrepreneurs into independent pack and ship stores before launching the PostNet franchise system in 1993.

PostNet is now proud to leverage its heritage and nearly 20-year history in franchising to allow independent operators access to the exceptional support, technology, merchandising and training associated with its award winning brand. Candidates can find more information at www.postnetfranchise.com/conversion. In fact, PostNet recently celebrated the grand opening of its first conversion store in Sunnyvale, California.

“Our proven business system, industry-leading support and world-recognized brand will provide new conversion store owners with the unique opportunity to capitalize on their territory’s potential, serve as the face of the PostNet in the community and set the direction of the market’s growth,” said Steve Greenbaum, CEO and co-founder of PostNet. “In addition, converted stores have the added benefit of being able to cross sell their existing services to both a new and established customer base.”

By converting, new franchisees will not have to pay an initial $29,000 franchisee fee and PostNet will make an upfront investment in training and support. Additionally, new franchisees and their businesses will benefit from:

  • Gradual royalty structure
  • Territory exclusivity
  • One-year free direct mail campaign to promote enhanced services and product offering
  • Modern streamlined store design
  • Access to PostNet’s world-class training and support featuring regional meetings, virtual classes, field support, financial analysis and access to PostNet’s proprietary systems
  • Internet and technology solutions such as web sites, SEO, email, file submission and other tools at no additional cost
  • Access to PostNet’s exclusive vendor relationships to expand business and lower costs

“By continuing our tradition of developing new product innovations like our business conversion program while keeping customer service a out top priority, PostNet is well positioned to drive franchisee success,” said Brian Spindel, President and co-founder of PostNet. “We share common objectives with our franchisees, which focuses on building and sustaining a profitable business and strong brand in this increasingly challenging economy.”

PostNet, which offers an array of high demand services and products tailored to meet the needs of business owners and today’s busy consumer, currently has more than 400 locations across the United States and over 850 stores worldwide. PostNet Helps Military Families with National Fisher House Drive

Everything becomes a blur when a military family receives the phone call about a wounded loved one. It is a time of real need and reminds us of the incredible sacrifices our men and women in uniform make to preserve our freedom.

Recognizing the special contribution our military and their families make, PostNet is proud to announce the launch of its annual Fisher House™ Foundation drive to help the families of wounded veterans. Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and often must travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House donates “comfort homes,” built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to stay close to loved ones free of charge during these difficult times.

“Fisher House provides peace of mind for military families because they’re just minutes away during treatment or rehabilitation,” said Steve Greenbaum, CEO of PostNet. “We’re proud to have Fisher House as our national charity and we’re confident that PostNet customers will recognize the value of their mission and contribute to their efforts to help our military families.”

Through July 6, PostNet locations across the U.S. are collecting donations for the Fisher House in boxes on their store counters. Customers and small businesses are encouraged to contribute spare change and other donations as they see fit. Since its inception in 1990, Fisher House has served more than 120,000 families, offered nearly 3 million days of lodging and saved those families more than $100 million in costs.

PostNet Centers Join National Effort to Reuse Packaging Materials

Each year, millions of pounds of plastic packing peanuts end up in landfills. Now, PostNet is doing its part to reduce that number. Each of PostNet’s more than 400 stores across the U.S. recently became approved collection centers for the Plastic Loose Fill Council, an organization formed in 1991 to promote the reuse and recycling of polystyrene loose fill, or packing peanuts.

To recycle used packing peanuts, just bring them to your nearest PostNet, and the store will reuse the peanuts in their day-to-day shipping operations.

“Our stores pack and ship thousands of packages each day,” said PostNet president Brian Spindel. “Now, customers can know that they’re helping to protect the environment simply by shipping with PostNet.”

Tips on packing peanut recycling:

  • Before you drop off used peanuts, make sure to sift through them thoroughly. Nothing is worse than dropping off a load of peanuts, and then finding out that you missed the family heirloom ring that Aunt Gertrude sent you.
  • If you want to be extra helpful to the store, separate biodegradable and non-biodegradable peanuts. Stores can use either, but some don’t like to mix them. (Not sure if your peanuts are biodegradable? Put them in water. If they dissolve, they are not plastic, but instead are made from a vegetable derivative.)

Panama City Location Jumpstarts Central America Expansion

Since opening its first location in 1993, PostNet has been a one-stop shop for the small-business owner. Fifteen years later, the Denver-based company is bringing their signature services to Panama – the first step in the brand’s expansion into Central America.

Pranas Lukauskis, CEO of Panaoutsource & Mail S.A., acquired the master franchise for PostNet in Panama after meeting the PostNet team at a franchise expo in 2007. Panama’s pilot center opened in December 2007 and celebrated its grand opening in January.

Panaoutsource has worked hard to customize their business for the Panamanian market. In addition to global shipping companies such as FedEx, DHL and UPS, PostNet Panama will also utilize the services of regional companies Copa Airlines Courier and Grupo Zoom.

Once the Panama City pilot center is running smoothly, Lukauskis plans to open four additional locations across the country by 2010. Over the next three to five years, he plans to open 15 to 20 locations.

“Our presence in Central America begins in Panama but certainly won’t end there,” said Brian Spindel, PostNet’s co-founder and president. “Over the next few years, we plan to expand into several other Central American countries including Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Honduras.”

About PostNet

Founded in 1993, Denver-based PostNet has more than 800 locations worldwide, including several hundred in the United States. Each locally owned and operated PostNet Neighborhood Business Center specializes in meeting the design, printing, copying and shipping needs of businesses and busy consumers, with a focus on exceptional, personal customer service.
